About Drytown CDP, California

Drytown is a census-designated place (CDP) in Amador County, California, United States. The population was 749 at the 2010 census. It is one of three communities in the county that were formerly mining towns, the other two being Jackson and Sutter Creek.

Drytown was founded in 1854 as a mining town, and was the county seat of Amador County from 1854 to 1856. It was called Dry Town because there was no water available for brewing beer. In 1856, the county seat was moved to Jackson, which had a more reliable water supply.

The town declined after the gold rushes ended, but revived in the early 20th century when mining operations began again. The town once again began to decline after World War II, and today only a few businesses remain.
