About Alum Rock CDP, California

Alum Rock is a census-designated place (CDP) in Santa Clara County, California, United States. The CDP includes the unincorporated community of Alum Rock as well as parts of the East San Jose area. The population was 33,164 at the 2010 census.

Alum Rock was originally part of Rancho Rincon de Los Esteros, a Mexican land grant given in 1834 by Governor José Figueroa to María Jesús Peralta de Aguirre. Her son, Domingo Peralta, inherited the ranch and served as a major presence in the area during the early days of California statehood.

In the early 20th century, Alum Rock was known for its natural springs, which attracted tourists from around the Bay Area. The springs were said to have medicinal properties, and people would come to “take the waters” for their health. A local inn was built to accommodate the tourists, and it remained a popular destination into the 1950s.

Today, Alum Rock is a diverse community with a large Hispanic population. It is home to many small businesses and is considered a “bedroom community” for San Jose. There are several parks and recreation areas in the CDP, including Alum Rock Park, which is the oldest municipal park in California.
