Monmouth is a census-designated place (CDP) in Marin County, California, United States. It is located 3.5 miles (5.6 km) southwest of downtown Novato, at an elevation of 36 feet (11 m). The population was 2,134 at the 2010 census.
Monmouth was originally an unincorporated community in Marin County, which was founded in the early 20th century. The town was named after the Monmouth Land Company, which owned the land on which the town was built. The company was formed by brothers Frank and Charles Monmouth, who were originally from New York.
The town of Monmouth was officially founded in 1906, and a post office was established the following year. The town grew rapidly in the early years, with several businesses and services being established. The Monmouth School District was formed in 1909, and the first school in town, Monmouth Elementary School, opened in 1910.
By the mid-1920s, the town had a population of over 500 people. In 1926, the Monmouth Volunteer Fire Department was founded, and in 1927, the Monmouth Lions Club was chartered.
The 1930s saw further growth in the town, with the construction of a new high school and a new elementary school. In 1935, Monmouth was incorporated as a city, with Frank Monmouth serving as its first mayor.
The 1940s were a time of growth for Monmouth, as the city’s population nearly doubled during the decade. Several new schools and a new city hall were built during this time.
In recent years, Monmouth has continued to grow and thrive. The city’s schools are highly rated, and its residents are involved in a variety of civic and cultural activities. Monmouth is a great place to live, work, and raise a family.
