The area around Fort Bidwell was first inhabited by the Pit River Indians. The first Euro-American settlers arrived in the 1860s, and the town was officially founded in 1866. It was named after John Bidwell, a pioneer and early settler in California.
In the early 20th century, Fort Bidwell became known as a place where people with tuberculosis could go to recuperate. A sanatorium was built in the town, and it became a popular destination for people from all over the country suffering from the disease.
