About Catheys Valley CDP, California
Catheys Valley is a census-designated place (CDP) in Mariposa County, California, United States. The population was 1,458 at the 2010 census, up from 1,287 at the 2000 census. It is located along State Route 140 between Mariposa, the county seat, and Yosemite National Park.
Catheys Valley was named after James Cathay, who settled in the area in 1850. He operated a stagecoach stop and hotel on the site of what is now the Catholic church. The valley was originally settled by miners during the California Gold Rush, but later became known for its agriculture. Today it is a bedroom community for workers in Mariposa and Yosemite.
