Nicolaus is a small town in Sutter County, California, with a population of just over 1,000 people. The town is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills, about 30 miles north of Sacramento. Nicolaus was founded in 1856 as a stop on the stagecoach route between Sacramento and Marysville. The town’s name comes from an early settler, Nicolaus Dittes.
