About Fort Bragg city, California
Fort Bragg city is located in Mendocino County, California in the United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,273. The city is known for itsassociation with the lumber industry and for being the site of the annual Fort Bragg Redwoods logging festival.
The first European settler in the area was Francis Drake, who claimed the land for England in 1579. The Spanish established a fort at the site in 1794, but it was abandoned within a year. In 1857, a group of settlers from Ohio established a settlement near the present-day city. The town was named after Braxton Bragg, a general in the Confederate Army.
The lumber industry has been an important part of the city’s economy since its inception. Fort Bragg was the terminus of the world’s first transcontinental railroad, which transporting lumber from Oregon to the East Coast. The city is still home to several sawmills and lumber companies.
In recent years, Fort Bragg has become a popular tourist destination, due in part to its scenic location on the Pacific Coast. The city is home to several bed and breakfasts, as well as a number of art galleries and shops.
