About Chinese Camp CDP, California

Chinese Camp is a census-designated place (CDP) in Tuolumne County, California, United States. The population was 1,126 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north side of the Stanislaus River, northeast of Sonora.

The town is named after the Chinese who worked in the gold mines during the California Gold Rush. In 1854, a group of miners from China were attacked by a mob of white miners. The Chinese miners were driven out of the area and the town became known as “White Man’s Camp”.

In 1852, a sawmill was built on Jackass Creek, about 2 miles (3.2 km) northeast of the present site of Chinese Camp. A post office opened in 1853.

During the American Civil War, Chinese Camp was a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach route.

In recent years, Chinese Camp has become a bedroom community for people who work in the San Francisco Bay Area and commute via Highway 120/Interstate 5.”
