About Shingle Springs Rancheria, California

The Shingle Springs Rancheria is a small community located in the Sierra foothills of California. The rancheria is home to a number of different Native American tribes, including the Miwok, Maidu, and Ohlone. The community is located on a piece of land that was originally given to the Miwok tribe by the Mexican government in 1848.

The Shingle Springs Rancheria has a long history of fighting for its survival. In the early 1900s, the federal government tried to terminate the rancheria, which would have resulted in the eviction of its residents. The community fought back and won a reprieve, but the threat of termination hung over their heads for decades. In the 1970s, the fight for survival took on a new urgency when the state of California announced plans to build a freeway through the middle of the rancheria. again, the community fought back and won, but this time they also won the right to self-governance.

Today, the Shingle Springs Rancheria is a thriving community with its own school, clinic, and other amenities. The community is proud of its history and its ability to persevere against all odds.
