Independence is a census-designated place (CDP) in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 3,954 at the 2010 census, up from 3,835 at the 2000 census.
The town of Independence is the county seat of Inyo County and is the largest community in the county. It is located on U.S. Route 395, the main north-south highway through the Owens Valley, and is about a three-hour drive from both Reno, Nevada and Los Angeles, California.
The town has a history dating back to the days of the Old West and is known for its association with the famous gunfighter Wyatt Earp. Today, Independence is a popular tourist destination for those interested in exploring the area’s natural beauty and history.
