The town of Markleeville was established in 1859 and named after John C. Marklee, who built a toll bridge across the Carson River. The town became the county seat in 1864.

The town is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains, with the Carson River running through it. There are several lakes in the area, including Lake Tahoe, which is about 30 miles away.
