Alturas is a city in northeastern California, United States. The city is the county seat of Modoc County, and is considered the “Gateway to the Modoc Plateau.” Alturas is located on the Pit River, east of the Warner Mountains and west of the Surprise Valley.

The region around Alturas was first inhabited by Native Americans of the Modoc tribe. The city was established in 1871 as a stagecoach stop and was officially incorporated in 1901. In recent years, the city has experienced population growth due to retirees moving to the area.

Alturas offers a wide range of outdoor recreation opportunities, including hiking, camping, fishing, and hunting. The city is also home to several museums and historical sites.
