About Indianola CDP, California

Indianola is a census-designated place (CDP) in Sutter County, California, United States. It is part of the Yuba City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,045 at the 2010 census.

The town was founded in 1849 by John D. Houston and named after the Native American tribe that lived in the area. Houston also built a sawmill and a gristmill, which attracted other settlers to the area. In 1851, a post office was established and Indianola became a stop on the stagecoach route between Marysville and Sacramento.

Although the town grew slowly, it did have some notable businesses, including a hotel, blacksmith shop, and livery stable. The town also had a school, which was started in 1852.

In 1856, Indianola was hit by a devastating flood that wiped out most of the town. Houston decided not to rebuild and instead moved to another town. The rest of the settlers soon followed suit and by 1858, Indianola was abandoned.

Although there are no longer any residents, Indianola still appears on maps and is used as a location reference for nearby roads and highways.
