About La Porte CDP, California

La Porte is a census-designated place (CDP) in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 4,671 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the county, east of the city of Antioch.

The town is named after the “la porte” or door in French, which was the entrance to the Rancho La Puente Mexican land grant, of which a small part later became the site of La Porte.

La Porte was originally developed as a stagecoach stop along the Putah South Line between Oakland and Sacramento. The community grew quickly after the construction of a railroad line through the town in 1869. La Porte became an incorporated city in 1925, but disincorporated in 1942 due to financial difficulties during World War II. The city was reincorporated in 1947.

Today, La Porte is a bedroom community for the Greater Bay Area. The town has a small downtown area with a few shops and restaurants. There are several parks and recreation areas in La Porte, including Big Break Regional Shoreline, a regional park on the San Joaquin River delta.
