About Borrego Springs CDP, California

Borrego Springs is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Diego County, California. The population was 3,429 at the 2010 census, up from 2,535 at the 2000 census. Borrego Springs is completely surrounded by Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

The community was named after the Spanish borregos, or bighorn sheep, that roam the nearby desert hills. It began as a resort community in the 1930s and still serves as a getaway for city dwellers seeking sun and recreation. Visitors enjoy the desert environment, golfing, tennis, and hiking. The town includes a branch of the San Diego County Library and several art galleries.

The area includes a number of archaeological sites of the prehistoric Cupule culture; these cupules are rock carvings made by grinding depressions into boulders. The 2009 Husum Fire burned about 860 acres (3.5 km2) around Borrego Springs.
