About Hopland CDP, California
Hopland is a census-designated place (CDP) in Mendocino County, California, United States. The population was 778 at the 2010 census. Hopland is located on the west side of U.S. Route 101, about 8 miles (13 km) north of Ukiah and 12 miles (19 km) south of Cloverdale.
The town of Hopland was originally established as a stopover point for stagecoaches traveling between Cloverdale and Ukiah. In 1857, the town was officially laid out and named after James A. Hopland, who owned the land on which the town was built. The first post office opened in 1858.
Today, Hopland is home to several wineries, as well as the University of California’s Hopland Research and Extension Center. The center is a research facility for the study of rangeland management, grazing systems, and watershed ecology.
