About Yermo CDP, California

Yermo is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 3,765 at the 2010 census, up from 2,130 at the 2000 census. Yermo is located 15 miles (24 km) north of Barstow on Interstate 15. It is home to the Calico Early Man Site and the Calico Ghost Town.

Yermo was founded in 1881 as a stop on the Silver Peak Railroad between Barstow and Silver Peak, Nevada. The town was named for Antonio María de la Guerra y Pacheco, the last Mexican governor of California. A post office was established in 1883.

The town’s economy was originally based on mining and ranching. The discovery of gypsum deposits in the area in 1925 led to the development of a large gypsum mine and plant by the National Gypsum Company. The mine closed in 1986, but the company still operates a large gypsum wallboard plant in Yermo.

The town is also home to the largest solar power plant in the world, the Ivanpah Solar Power Facility.
