About Ahwahnee CDP, California

Ahwahnee CDP, California is a census-designated place (CDP) in Madera County, California, United States. The population was 1,302 at the 2010 census.

The Ahwahnee area was originally inhabited by the indigenous Sierra Miwok people. The name “Ahwahnee” means “valley of the moon” in the Miwok language.

In the early 1900s, the Ahwahnee Hotel was built in the area, which quickly became a popular destination for tourists. The hotel was destroyed in a fire in 1969 but was rebuilt and reopened in 1971.

today, Ahwahnee is still a popular tourist destination, known for its scenic beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities.
