About Big Lagoon CDP, California
Big Lagoon is a census-designated place in Humboldt County, California, United States. It is located on the coast of Humboldt Bay, about 5 miles (8 km) north of Eureka, at an elevation of 33 feet (10 m). The population was 1,425 at the 2010 census, down from 1,827 at the 2000 census.
The community is named for Big Lagoon, which lies just to the north of the CDP. Big Lagoon was originally inhabited by the Wiyot people. The first European settlers arrived in the 1850s, and the area was logged extensively in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Logging continues in the area, but has declined since the 1990s.
Fishing is also an important part of the local economy, and both commercial and sport fishing take place in Big Lagoon and the surrounding waters. The lagoon is also popular for boating and other water activities.
Big Lagoon is a scenic area with many opportunities for outdoor recreation. It is also home to several businesses and facilities, including a post office, elementary school, and community center.
