About Big River CDP, California

Big River CDP, California is a census-designated place (CDP) in Shasta County, California, United States. The population was 2,384 at the 2010 census, up from 1,951 at the 2000 census. It is located on the east bank of the Sacramento River, just north of Redding.

Big River is an unincorporated community with a long history of gold mining. It was originally known as Salmon City, and later renamed to Big River City. A post office operated in Big River from 1857 to 1858.

The town grew rapidly during the early 1900s, as the Big River Mining Company operated a large gold mine in the area. The mine closed in 1918, but the town continued to grow as a farming and ranching community.

Today, Big River is a small community with a population of just over 2,000 people. While it no longer has a gold mine, it still retains its rural charm and is a great place to live or visit.
