About Cabazon CDP, California

Cabazon is a census-designated place (CDP) in Riverside County, California, United States. The population was 2,535 at the 2010 census. Cabazon is located adjacent to the Cabazon Outlets shopping mall.

The area around Cabazon was first inhabited by the Cahuilla tribe of Native Americans. The Serrano also lived in the area for a time before moving to the mountains. The first European settlers arrived in the 1850s and established ranches.

Cabazon was originally known as Gibbel Station, after one of the early ranchers. In 1884, the Southern Pacific Railroad established a station in Gibbel and the name was changed to Cabazon, after a nearby mountain peak.

The town grew slowly until the 1960s when construction of Interstate 10 began. This brought an influx of workers and new businesses to the area. In 1968, Dinny and Wade Birdwell opened the first outlet store in Cabazon. This led to the development of the Cabazon Outlets, which now attract visitors from all over Southern California.
