About Chilcoot-Vinton CDP, California

Chilcoot-Vinton is a census-designated place (CDP) in Sierra County, California, United States. The population was 1,879 at the 2010 census, up from 1,435 at the 2000 census.

The Chilcoot post office opened in 1866, closed in 1869, and re-opened in 1870. The name Chilcoot comes from the Kootenai tribe of Native Americans who once lived in the area.

Vinton was established as a stagecoach stop on the Placerville-Reno route in 1860. It was named after W. H. Vinton, an early settler. The Vinton post office opened in 1861, changed its name to Verdi in 1874, and moved to Reno in 1875.

The Chilcoot-Vinton CDP includes the unincorporated communities of Chilcoot, Vinton, and Floriston.
