About El Nido CDP, California

El Nido is a census-designated place (CDP) in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 1,091 at the 2010 census. El Nido is located on the Nicasio Creek 4.5 miles (7.2 km) south-southwest of Novato, at an elevation of 115 feet (35 m).

The community is named for a rancho which was established in 1844 by Mariano Vallejo, who was then the governor of Alta California. The name “El Nido” (which means “the nest”) refers to a large redwood tree which served as a landmark for travelers on the old road from Sausalito to Sonoma.

El Nido CDP has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.7 km2), all of it land.
