About El Sobrante CDP, California

El Sobrante is a census-designated place (CDP) in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 12,669 at the 2010 census. The Spanish word sobrante means “remainder”, “surplus” or “leftover”.

El Sobrante is located 15 miles (24 km) northeast of San Francisco in the San Francisco Bay Area. It is situated between Richmond to the north, San Pablo to the south, Pinole to the west, and Antioch to the east. The city of Hercules lies directly to the north. El Sobrante is unincorporated and contains several small residential neighborhoods scattered throughout.

The Hopkins Creek Watershed runs through El Sobrante and has several tributaries including Polhemus Creek and Rheem Creek. The San Pablo Dam Reservoir is located within El Sobrante and offers fishing, boating, and hiking opportunities.
