About Floriston CDP, California

Floriston is a census-designated place in Plumas County, California, United States. The population was 485 at the 2010 census, up from 474 at the 2000 census. Floriston is located on the Middle Fork of the Feather River, 3mi east-northeast of Portola, at an elevation of 5182feet.

The town was originally called Flora, after one of the first settlers’ daughters. When a post office was established in 1881, the name was changed to avoid confusion with another California community also named Flora. The new name, Floriston, was derived from the Latin words for “flower” and “town”.

Floriston is home to the oldest continuously operating sawmill in California, the Lumber Company, which was founded in 1852. The mill has been in continuous operation since then, except for a brief closure in the early 1990s.
