About June Lake CDP, California

June Lake is a census-designated place in Mono County, California, United States. The population was 1,297 at the 2010 census. June Lake is located on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, 22 miles (35 km) north of Mammoth Lakes on State Route 158. The June Lake Loop road encircles June Mountain and provides access to several nearby lakes, including Grant, Silver, Gull, and Rush.

June Lake was originally settled by the Mono people, who used the area for hunting and fishing. In 1883, a stagecoach station was built in June Lake, and the town began to grow. The first post office opened in 1884. In 1889, June Lake was named after June Sargeant, the daughter of one of the area’s first settlers.

Today, June Lake is a popular tourist destination, with many visitors coming to fish, hike, and enjoy the scenic views. The June Lake Marina offers boat rentals and fishing supplies, and there are several campgrounds in the area.
