About Maxwell CDP, California

Maxwell is a small census-designated place located in Colusa County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,039. The town is named after James Clerk Maxwell, a Scottish physicist who developed the theory of electromagnetism.

The town is located on the site of the former Rancho Arroyo Hondo Mexican land grant. The Maxwell area was first settled by ranchers in the 1850s. In 1881, the California Pacific Railroad built a line through the town, which led to an increase in population.

Today, Maxwell is a quiet community with a few businesses and amenities. The town is home to a general store, a cafe, a gas station, and a post office. There are also several churches and a school.
