About Olancha CDP, California

Olancha is a census-designated place (CDP) in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 190 at the 2010 census, up from 167 at the 2000 census. It is the easternmost settlement in the county and is located in the Owens Valley, east of Lone Pine.

The CDP includes the unincorporated community of Olancha as well as the nearby ghost town of Cartago. Olancha is home to Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory, operated by the University of California.

The name “Olancha” comes from a Native American village that was once located near present-day Olancha.
