About Sierra City CDP, California

Sierra City is a census-designated place in Sierra County, California, United States. The population was 310 at the 2010 census, up from 243 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Sierra County. Sierra City is located on the North Fork of the Yuba River, at an elevation of 3,956 feet (1,205 m).

The town began as a mining camp in 1850 during the California Gold Rush. Its name came from its location in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. During the early years, the town was known for its lawlessness and was the site of several murders. In 1851, a vigilante group was formed to help keep the peace.

Sierra City has a history of mining activity, and there are still some active mines in the area. The town is also a popular destination for outdoor recreation, including hiking, camping, fishing, and mountain biking.
