About Tomales CDP, California

Tomales CDP, California is a census-designated place (CDP) in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 862 at the 2010 census.

Tomales is located on the Rancho Las Salinas Mexican land grant. Tomales was originally a fishing village, and grew rapidly after the establishment of the nearby Point Reyes Station in 1857. The town reached its peak in the 1880s, when it had a population of nearly 1,000. However, the construction of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad led to a decline in the local fishing industry, and Tomales’ population began to dwindle.

Today, Tomales is a small community with a population of less than 1,000 people. However, it remains a popular tourist destination due to its proximity to the Point Reyes National Seashore.
