About Magalia CDP, California

Magalia is a census-designated place (CDP) in Butte County, California, United States. The population was 11,310 at the 2010 census, up from 9,539 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chico Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Magalia is located about 15 miles (24 km) north of Paradise, and about 18 miles (29 km) north of Chico. It lies east of the town of Stirling City and west of the unincorporated community of Wyandotte.

The town was originally known as Dogtown, due to the large number of stray dogs that roamed the area. In 1857, a post office was established under the name of Magalia, after Maria de Jesus Magalia Vallejo, the wife of General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo.
