Rough and Ready CDP, California is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Nevada County, California, United States. The population was 1,132 at the 2010 census.
Rough and Ready was founded in 1849 as a mining town. It was originally named after General Zachary Taylor, who became the 12th President of the United States. The town’s name was later changed to Rough and Ready when it was discovered that another California town had already been given the name of Zachary Taylor.
Rough and Ready is home to the historic Empire Mine, which was one of the largest gold mines in California. The mine operated for over 100 years and produced over 5 million ounces of gold. The Empire Mine State Historic Park is now a popular tourist destination.
Rough and Ready is a small town with a population of just over 1,000 people. However, it is rich in history and offers visitors a unique glimpse into California’s Gold Rush past.
