About Silver City CDP, California

Silver City CDP is a census-designated place in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census.

The community is located on the northern edge of the Mojave Desert and sits at an elevation of 3,000 feet (910 m). It is bordered by the city of Barstow to the east and the unincorporated community of Hinkley to the west.

The area around Silver City was first settled by Mormon pioneers in 1851. A post office was established in 1855 and the town was later named after a nearby silver mine.

During the 20th century, Silver City became a popular stop for travelers on Route 66. Today, it is a quiet desert community with a few businesses and residential homes.
